As
a parent of a student about to leave for college, you may have anxieties
about what your student will face. The truth is, your concerns are
not completely unfounded.
Spiritual challenges are unavoidable in today's world, and nowhere
is this truth more obvious than on our college campuses. Students
are exposed to a liberal world view and new ideas, many of which
are entirely humanistic. Many students fall prey to peer-pressure,
loneliness, fear, and temptation.
Everything that you have taught them will be challenged when they
make the transition to an independent life on the university campus.
Is your student ready for the responsibility?
The statistics are not encouraging. According to Chris Leland, Ph.D.,
the Director of College & University Outreach and Senior Fellow
for Christian Worldview Studies at the Focus on the Family Institute,
“over 75 percent of Christian students will leave college
with their faith either absent or severely damaged. Over 80 percent
of college professors report themselves as either liberal or very
liberal. Together with the other statistics about the impact this
culture is having on a student's Christian worldview, the odds seem
overwhelming.”
Even if these students later return to their faith in Christ, many
important decisions are typically made during the college experience,
including career choices and mate choices.
We’re happy to say that there is good news:
Campus ministries exist to help you and your students not only survive,
but grow during what can be a very challenging time.
Campus Christian Fellowship (CCF) is a non-profit organization that
ministers to University students. CCF currently has full time ministries
on four campuses in the state of North Carolina. Those four universities
are the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, East Carolina
University, North Carolina State University, and the University
of North Carolina at Wilmington.
In these ministries, young adults are nurtured in a caring atmosphere,
which encourages them to maintain their faith, grow in their faith,
and develop relationships with other students who have a desire
to grow in their faith as well..
Each ministry is unique, and shaped by the needs of the particular
campus. We encourage you to check out the websites for each ministry
and see what is going on.
Within all the ministries, the students participate in Bible studies,
one-on-one meetings with the minister or other mentor, and many
other group events. They attend retreats together and go on mission
trips together. In short, they share one another’s lives and
help each other to thrive.
We cherish the opportunity to minister to your student. If we can
help you in any way, please contact us.
